A huge congratulations to Dave Wooff for tagging an extraordinary marlin on January 6th off the Cavalli Islands. The track of this marlin, revealed by the IGFA Great Marlin Race team, is nothing short of legendary. After 244 days, the tag popped off 4,739 nautical miles away, southwest of the Galapagos Islands.
This is now the third-longest pop-off distance in the history of the IGFA Great Marlin Race and shatters the previous record for a striped marlin by more than 2,000nm!
The marlin’s journey, modeled by Stanford University and Barbara Block, shows it spent January and February around East Northland, left New Zealand waters in March, navigated warm waters in May and June, and eventually reached the eastern side of the East Pacific Ridge.
This remarkable feat is a proud achievement for the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club (Inc) satellite tagging program, made possible through the support of the New Zealand Marine Research Foundation. We’re optimistic that this marlin’s incredible trek will make it the 2024 IGFA Great Marlin Race winner.
