Cancelled - Snapper Tournament 30th May 2020

The Committee held a meeting last night to discuss several items, one of which was the snapper tournament this weekend.

It was decided due to forecast weather conditions this weekend on top of the recent lumpy seas and taking into account the difficulties we face with Covid 19 that the tournament will be cancelled.

The restrictions we are facing at present due to Covid 19 are having a detrimental effect on the club’s ability to operate normally and unfortunately this may continue for a couple of weeks. The management and committee are forming a plan to restore normal operations in the short to medium term. We anticipate this will include a replacement snapper tournament within the next month or so.

We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause in the interim.

Please send us any pics if you manage to sneak out for a fish we love seeing them!

We are allowed to open our doors from this coming Thursday in a limited capacity. Please note that there will be no club draw, jug draw or announcements. The following rules will apply in the interim so that we can comply with this week's regulations:
TEMPORARY OPERATION RULES – MERCURY BAY GAME FISHING CLUB

To comply with the rules at the first stage of Alert level two, the club will be operating as a restaurant up until May 20th. We will open at 5pm and you will be expected to order food at some stage if you are drinking alcohol.

The only entry will be the main front door close to the street and everybody will be required to register, your membership card would be helpful to speed things up.

Once seated, you will be expected to remain at that table or leaner except for comfort visits (toilet) or people going outside to smoke. No alcohol is to be taken onto the deck or any other outside area. You can’t get up and mingle.

As the regulations do not allow patrons to go to the actual bar or a serving area, an employee will be assigned to serve your table/leaner. We are unable to do our raffles.

There is simply no way we can absorb the higher cost of table service when our income is being significantly impacted. For the period that we are required to provide table service there will be a ‘Covid Tax’ of $1 per drink and $2 per meal added to our normal prices. This will be removed when we can operate as we normally do.

In the short term, which may extend for a few weeks, beer and spirits will be supplied in bottles only – there will be no draught beer or poured spirits. Wine can still be purchased by bottle or glass. This will be reassessed regularly and our usual range of drinks will be available as soon as it is deemed appropriate.

From May 21st we will revert to operating as a bar and restaurant and resume opening at 3pm but seating and spacing rules will still need to apply to ensure our compliance with the law.

The committee and management are committed to opening the club for members to use to the fullest extent permitted by law. We are also committed to the longevity of the club so we need to remain mindful of our costs at this time when our income is being significantly reduced due to government decree.

In order to maintain the spacing requirements required by these rules, we can fit a maximum of 79 people in the club at any one time and even this would only happen if groups were exactly the right size which is unlikely to happen. In the event that we have reached our capacity we will endeavour to fly the club flag which will be the sign for you to carry on driving past but please bear in mind we would dearly love to see you on a subsequent evening.

Please be aware that we are all new to this and will do our best to ensure you have an enjoyable visit. Whether you agree or not, we are required to comply with the law and expect our patrons to do so as well. We look forward to seeing you when our club flag is safely folded away.

Thanks,
Alan Proctor

Heres a couple of awesome photos sent into us of local legend CL 'Boy' Smith. First photo is one of many Marlin caught solo in his 14 ft clinker dinghy with an Archimedes outboard and a tractor seat as a game chair!
The second photo from what I can read is a 263lb black on the launch Avon 2!
Many of you may have seen Boy Smith's rod and reel on display in our Whitianga clubrooms.

If you have any cool old pics like this we would love to see them!
