FISHING

I’m still getting lots of excellent reports about the fishing out of Whitianga.  There are plenty of bait fish around so you can have the nice fresh baits that big fish love.  The common message is that many of the snapper are really big and I’ve heard from a couple of guys that have returned multiple fish to the water around and over the 20lb mark in single trips.  There have also been a few very successful trips out wide where the popular species has been gem fish, blue nose and hapuku – all very nice tasting fish and well worth  the time to get out on the deep structure.  For people in smaller craft or those wanting to stay out of the fresh westerlies, there are some good size fish being caught around the edges of the bay from Round Island all the way out to Matapaua Bay and from Cemetery Point to Mussel Rock.  On the Kuaotunu side, the Kuaotunu reef is also producing some good keepers.

CONGRATULATIONS

To Keith Free, fishing on Freedom who caught a 9.62 snapper on 8kg line this week – a pending pin fish.   There are many reports of large snapper out there at the moment – it’s a good time to prepare thoroughly and try for a PB.

SNAPPER TOURNAMENT

Unfortunately, notwithstanding the above, the weather forecast has forced the tournament committee to cancel the Snapper Tournament due to have been held on Saturday.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY RUGBY

Don’t forget we can show all the super rugby on our big screen.  We’re getting down to the pointy end of the season, come down and support your favourite team with your friends and enjoy a few drinks and/or a meal.

STREET UPGRADE

Our driveway has been completed and is now free from obstruction.  The contractor has promised to open the car parks on the street in front of the club for the long weekend.  The following week they are planning to be all but finished at our end of the road. We’re on the downhill run now and we’re looking forward to the finished product.  Come down and support the club after what has been a very tough few weeks.

FISHING I haven’t heard a lot from people this week so far. What news I have heard has been pretty positive with plenty of snapper being caught. Out around the Mercury Islands has been popular but I don’t know how they’ve got on closer in around the bay this week....

FISHING There hasn’t been a lot of change since last week.   There seems to be plenty of snapper out there with some really good ones amongst them.  I’ve heard good reports from around most of the islands but I had someone tell me they had been doing exceptionally...
