FISHING

With the competitions running there have been plenty of fish caught this week.  There are many species represented in the catch list, including several blue marlin, plenty of striped marlin (well over a dozen), a couple of shortbill spearfish, mahimahi and all the smaller species.  Surprisingly there have only been a couple of kingfish weighed.  Out wide, most action has been in the extreme north or extreme south of our area.  Until yesterday there wasn’t a lot going on in the central area at all.  Last weekend there was a super seiner operating just south of the Hook.  Whether there was nothing caught anywhere near this area for the best part of a week following that, had anything to do with the presence of the seiner is something that has been hotly debated on social media, but it seems a hell of a coincidence.  We’ve weighed a number of snapper over or around the 15lb mark so they’re on the bite too – as usual, patience and perseverance is required.

SAD NEWS

Unfortunately, Stacy Bale passed away last week.  She was a keen fisher and will be sadly missed. Our thoughts go to her family and friends at this difficult time.

TRISTRAM MARINE OPEN, SIMRAD/ITM NATIONALS

Both of these tournaments are underway now and will conclude tomorrow.  The weather has been better than predicted and we have had plenty of fish caught in our area so that end results will be interesting.  There have been a few blue marlin caught this week, plenty of striped marlin, shortbill spearfish, mahimahi, a snapper of 11kg and a number of other noteable catches.  Unfortunately they won’t all qualify for these tournaments but it goes to show there are plenty of good fish around.

OFFSHORE POWERBOATS

These guys will be in town a lot earlier this year – next weekend in fact.  With racing on Saturday March 2nd,  they are desperate for support boats of any size.  Launches, speed boats, jet skis, can all play a role.  As it’s not too far away, we need offers of assistance asap please.  Please let someone in the office know and we’ll put you in touch with the organisers.
