FISHING

Generally speaking, snapper fishing is not easy and is even harder on rocks or reef. The only two places where I have heard of people catching snapper in any quantity is in the Puddle or in and around the river. There is also a fair bit of by catch in these areas, mostly trevally and gurnard. There was a fair bit of bird action this week around Davis Point and in the wider part of the bay. Under this activity it’s pretty easy to catch kahawai and there have been a couple of people catching kingies after rigging up a live bait and lowering it around the edge of the schooling fish. Further out we got off the mark with our first marlin of the season and there were several reports of a large school of skipjack tuna. Hopefully it won’t be long before we see our first yellowfin or big eye.

CONGRATULATIONS

To club member Jim Nicholson for catching and weighing the first striped marlin for this season for the club and at this early stage, we believe the first for the season for the New Zealand Sport Fishing Council. The fish was caught on Sunday on the vessel Kilvay and weighed 101.96kg. It was caught in the grid square sponsored by Malcolm Carr Insurance Services.

SPONSORS GRID MAPS

These are now available laminated from the office. A4 size is free, A3 size is $3 each. If you can’t get in here easily there is a copy on our website www.gamebase.co.nz

FISHGRID

Our new grid layout has now been loaded onto the Fishgrid site at www.fishgrid.com.  This site will show you our sponsors grid layout and even better, where the different fish are being caught throughout the season. You can also look at the results from other fishing clubs all around the place which is handy if you are able to get to other areas to fish.

FISHING I’ve had a few much better reports this week with people seemingly finding it easier to catch snapper.  Popular spots include the Puddle, the northern edge of the Mercury Islands, outside Centre Island and the river mouth.  There are a few kahawai around but...

FISHING There hasn’t been much change since last week. Snapper fishing is still hot and cold with some anglers faring well and others coming home empty handed.  The best spots still seem to be over the sand/mud around the Puddle or around the river and river mouth. ...

FISHING Not a lot of good news on the snapper front – there seems to be plenty out there but it’s hard to get a bite.  A change of tide will sometimes spur them on and make sure your bait is well off the bottom.  Conversely, some nice pannies are being caught in the...
