FISHING

There’s some excellent fishing at the moment in our area and we’ve had plenty of opportunity to get out there amongst it.  In the last week we’ve had broadbill, blue marlin and striped marlin all at the weigh station at some stage.  They’re also doing very well with snapper, kingfish, kahawai and trevally.  Part way through our current tournament all these inshore species are well represented with some excellent weights coming through.  A couple of snapper getting close to 20lb and a kingi over 40lb – nothing to be sneezed at.  Reports are coming in that there are lots of smaller ones for the table too.  A few guys have been doing well around Ohinau, Flat Island & the Black Rocks.

STABICRAFT TRAILER BOAT TOURNAMENT

This tournament is underway now and there is a prize giving each of the three fishing nights.  A tremendous improvement in entries this year with about 25% more anglers (318) in the draw for the stabicraft 1550 boat package including DLM trailer, Yamaha Motor and Furuno electronics. Glen Clark has done an excellent job collecting a huge number of prizes and the weather looks to be playing its part.  Glen also managed to organize the return of our leg of the Snapper World Cup – thanks to ENL for the opportunity. Thanks to all the sponsors, including Stabicraft, Whitianga Marine Centre, Ocean Sports Marine, Yamaha, DLM Trailers, Furuno, Shimano and others.

BILLFISH CLASSIC

There’s hardly time to take a breath before our next tournament which will be held next week – the Billfish Classic. Fishing will be next Thursday, Friday and Saturday and briefing with the Calcutta will be next  WednesdayThe (very) long range weather forecast is pretty good at this early stage so keep in the back of your mind that there will be no more than 40 boats competing
